I am interested in the tales of ultimate destruction from such a thing! I don't have merc slots to do it, though. /sadface

I would be interested to see how they went against wind rider packs, or in topk, or on the battlefield in fow.

Leveraging on the merc mesmer heroes popularity for AoE armor ignoring damage and mixing that with Mantra of Frost for energy and damage reduction.

Note that this is UNTESTED as I do not have any merc heroes yet.

Tried that, personally. It was lackluster due to the recharge on winter. I wouldn't recommend it in any normal style of play.

I run 2x E-Surge, 1x Ineptitude, 2x Invoke Lightning Ele's, 1 BiP Resto, and one combination UA/Prot (since I can drop a lot of e-management). Works wonders. The ele's are substitutable per area, such as the DoA, where I use an ST Rit, or other areas where I might prefer an MM.

The effectiveness of this build could be improved a LOT simply having the player use RT/R (or R/RT) for place himself Winter and then abuse of Summon Spirits. No recharge/spirit range issue.

I thought about that but a RT/R (or R/RT) would not have Mantra of Frost. Probably still workable with the prots, but not ideal. You can try sticking QZ to the ranger or use some recharge pve skill combo (e.g. Air of Superiority) on your Me/R (or R/Me).

The recharge on winter is fine if you are defending an area.

Note - normal style of play. The majority of missions, vanquishes, dungeons, and more don't involve defending an area. Those that do rarely warrant a custom build. If summon spirits + winter was used, it is more viable. On a ranger, the extra armor should compensate for lack of mantra.

I suppose, but I don't really like the fixed player profession.

Ofc not, but trust me on this - I tried it just two days ago. 60 second recharge is.. way too long. Eternal Grove, or the defending NF mission, are the only areas where this is viable unless you take winter with you.

You're better off dropping the ranger and adding a source of protection.
